Showcasing Yorkshire’s under-represented talent from the worlds of Caribbean carnival, and related disciplines of dance, music, media, theatre and more.
Represent North is an online directory of under-represented artists and talent from the worlds of Caribbean Carnival and related disciplines in Yorkshire – dance, music, media, production, theatre, special effects make up and more.
Our aim is to showcase the work of predominantly artists and practitioners of colour who are traditionally under the radar and have limited engagement with the region’s flourishing cultural scene. We want to share what we know and love about them with the world.
Represent North was founded by Public Relations consultant Susan Pitter of Pitter Communications, and her colleague Dawn Cameron, of Armstrong Cameron. Together the formidable duo have spearheaded a range of arts projects, and raised just shy of £1 million in funding for the Carnival arts sector.
Bemused that she was fast becoming an unofficial go-to contact for all things carnival and for dancers, musicians, performers and artists of colour, Susan’s response to an obvious gap was Represent North.
As diverse in culture as Leeds and Yorkshire are, there is still work to be done to reflect what the region truly looks like, opportunities for the sector to create exciting new collaborations, to engage with ‘hard to reach’ communities (that really aren’t that hard to reach!) and to sing about an amazing pool of talent that represents what’s really out there.
Though we’re starting small, focusing on 15 amazing artists listed on Represent North, our ambitions are as big as theirs! We have plans in the pipeline to add to the directory and expand to other regions, so watch this space! Until then, get to know some incredible talent here and contact us if you want to know more.
