Ella Mesma is a British born dancer, choreographer and artist of mixed heritage and Artistic Director of the Ella Mesma Company in Leeds which she founded to make work reflecting her background in Afro-Latin, Breaking and Contemporary dance.
A curator, and Development Dance Artist with Yorkshire Dance, Ella’s dance career began with Samba, Salsa and other Afro Latin styles. She has since performed internationally with the Russell Maliphant Company’s The Rodin Project, and toured across the UK with shows and workshops. She has also toured the Roots of Rumba Festival, which she created in 2013 to showcase and celebrate artists who work with dances of the African Diaspora.
Ella shares her skills and love for dance with schools and companies through educational sessions, teaching Samba no Pe and carnival workshops since 2005, and working with other artists and percussionists such as Claudio Kron do Brazil.
As an emerging artist, Ella has been a Future Dance Leader (ABLE 2013); a Bench Fellow (2015), as well as Associate or Resident Artist for Casa Latin American Festival, 2016, Dance City and Bristol Trinity Centre.
