Leeds based Glennis Fleming fuses her love of Carnival, gems and African fabrics to create customised costume accessories and looks as well as unique up cycled jewellery pieces.
A lover of carnival masquerade Glennis has donned costumes to take part in carnivals events across the UK including Leeds West Indian Carnival (LWIC), Notting Hill and Trinidad & Tobago carnivals. Her 2017 self designed and made costume won her the Best Individual Costume title at Leeds Carnival 50.
Inspired by her masquerade experiences, her African Caribbean heritage and involvement in costume production (with LWIC and AnonyMas carnival troupe), Glennis established Gem aFrique.
Gem aFrique produces unique, often one off, up cycled jewellery pieces using some of her favourite materials including African textiles, gem embellishments, cowrie shells and feathers.
